When walking around the hip El Born area of Barcelona, we popped into a cozy atelier of Ramon Cuberta, young shoemaker. Carrying on the classic shoemaking tradition, Mr. Cuberta is one of the two currently active practitioners of the trade in Barcelona, alongside the world renowned master Norman Vilalta.
Mr. Cuberta’s shoes are very classic in style. He explained that he aims towards tension in every cut and line, lending a dynamic feel to his designs. The colours are traditional and, unlike many modern Spanish shoemakers, he doesn’t prefer the excessively patinated finishing. The chosen style ages more beautifully, as the user creates his own patina by repeated polishings and wear. More down-tuned appearance is also proper for work and official occasions.
The Ramon Cuberta lineup features both factory made ready to wear shoes with a gemmed Goodyear welted construction (although he wishes to have a handwelted and handsoled, ungemmed construction available soon) and full handwelted, handcrafted bespoke shoes, where the imagination of the customer is the only limit to style.
The prices of both bespoke and ready to wear shoes are very reasonable and the shoes of the ready to wear line come with lasted shoe trees – a feature often reserved to much more expensive shoes. Unique, individual bespoke models begin from 2000€, which is a very competitive price. Mr. Cuberta told us that he makes as many fitting shoes as possible to ensure that both the fit and model of the shoes are perfectly what the customer wishes.
If you’re visiting Barcelona and are searching for shoes, do pay a visit to Mr. Cuberta!
